Three Quick Holiday Stress-Busters

Finding Balance During the Holiday Season

Holiday stress relief is essential for elementary music teachers. As the teacher of small humans and the organizer and director of said humans holiday concerts, the holiday season brings excitement, joy, and plenty of extra responsibilities. From concerts to holiday-themed lessons to all the personal items on your agenda, it’s a lot.

With so much happening, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why having a few quick, powerful ways to recharge can make all the difference. Here are three holiday stress relievers for elementary music teachers that only take a few minutes but can help you feel calm, balanced, and ready for anything.

1. The “5-Deep-Breaths” Reset 🌬️

  • What to do: Close your eyes and take five deep, slow breaths. Count to four as you inhale, and to five as you exhale. With each breath, focus on relaxing your shoulders and jaw.
  • When to do it: Try this before a class, in between rehearsals, or at the end of a long day.
  • Why it works: Deep breathing engages your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation, reducing stress, and resetting your focus. This mini-meditation can help give you just the holiday stress relief you need as an elementary music teacher to feel more grounded and ready to take on the next task.

2. Mini Desk Stretch Routine 🧘‍♀️

  • What to do: Stand up and do one or two minutes of gentle stretching. Roll your shoulders, touch your toes, and reach your arms overhead.
  • When to do it: Use this stretch routine between classes, during a short break, or while waiting for students to settle in.
  • Why it works: These light stretches relieve muscle tension, especially helpful after directing students or carrying equipment. The increased circulation can quickly re-energize you, making this routine a great quick fix.

3. The “Favorite Song Reset” 🎶

  • What to do: Put on one of your favorite, feel-good songs. Listen and, if you can, move or dance along for a couple of minutes.
  • When to do it: Use this mood boost before or after school, during lunch, or right after a big performance.
  • Why it works: Listening to a favorite song can shift your mood instantly, lifting your spirits and helping you reset after a busy class or concert. A musical reset like this is perfect for music teachers, helping you find joy and energy in the moment.
