Holiday Tips for Music Teachers: Survive and Thrive This Season!

The holiday season is magical, but for music teachers, it can also feel like complete chaos. Between concerts, classroom activities, and holiday prep at home, there’s barely time to breathe. Here’s a collection of holiday tips for music teachers to help you stay sane and actually enjoy the season.

Holiday Tip #1: Get Organized Early

Preparation is your best friend. Before the Thanksgiving break, make sure all your concert plans are in place. Write down schedules, finalize your music selections, assign roles, and map out your decorations. The more you do upfront, the smoother things will go. When the crunch time arrives, everything will already be set.

Pro Tip: Create a checklist that includes everything—balloons, banners, music, and practice schedules. Checking off tasks feels amazing!

Holiday Tip #2: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for What You Need

You’re a music teacher, not a superhero. If you need extra time for rehearsals, ask for it. Many times, administrators are open to adjusting schedules, but they need you to take the initiative. Explain your needs clearly and professionally.

Also, advocate for your students. Remind others that the performances benefit the entire school community, not just your music class.

Holiday Tip #3: Balance Rehearsals with Fun

Rehearsals can get monotonous if they’re not broken up with some fun. Alternate between singing and short breaks to keep the kids energized. Play games, read a festive story, or add movement activities between songs.

Choose music that your students genuinely enjoy. When they connect with the songs, their enthusiasm shows during the performance.

Holiday Tip #4: Manage Your Time Like a Pro

At home, simplify your holiday tasks. Don’t worry if your Christmas shopping isn’t done yet—there’s no rule saying you can’t shop after the 18th! If you want to get ahead next year, shop throughout the year and keep a gift stash ready.

At school, use technology to help students practice independently. Platforms like Clever or downloadable music files can allow students to practice during free time without your constant supervision.

Holiday Tip #5: Remember to Breathe

Finally, remember—you’re just one person. You can’t do it all, and that’s okay. Focus on one task at a time and don’t overthink it.

The holidays are about joy and connection, so don’t lose sight of that. These holiday tips for music teachers are here to help you embrace the season while keeping your sanity intact. Happy teaching! 🎶
