How to Stop Feeling Like a Bad Teacher in 15 Seconds a Day

Sep 23, 2026 | Motivation for Music Teachers, Tips and Tricks for Music Teachers

We’ve all had those days. You shut your classroom door at 3:15 PM, sink into your desk chair, and think: “I am terrible at this.” The truth is, you’re NOT a bad teacher.

Here’s what I want you to know right off the bat:

  1. You are not alone—we all have dumpster fire days.
  2. You aren’t actually a bad teacher; your brain is just playing a sneaky evolutionary trick on you.

Why Your Brain Remembers the Dumpster Fires

Back in caveman days, paying attention to danger (like a lion in the bushes) kept us alive, while remembering the colors of a pretty flower was optional. Because of that biology, human brains are hardwired for negativity bias.

When you have one rough class on a Thursday afternoon, that class rides home with you in the car, sits at your dinner table, and wakes you up at 2:00 AM. Meanwhile, the five classes that went brilliantly? Your brain filed those away like junk mail. You don’t lack wins in your music classroom—you just lack a system to hold onto them.

The 15-Second Daily Fix

Here’s the good news. You don’t need a massive life overhaul or a 20-minute daily journaling routine. Right before you pack up your bag for the day, take 15 seconds to write down one specific thing that went right.

It can be on paper, in Google Keep, or in your phone’s notes app. Just write it down.

  • Did a student who usually tunes out finally give you their full attention?
  • Did a kid finally find the steady beat after weeks of trying?
  • Did someone give you the best hug in the hallway?

It’s Not Journaling—It’s Data Collection

Shift your mindset: you aren’t writing a diary entry. You are gathering concrete proof.

When the Sunday Scaries hit and you start worrying about the week ahead, open your notes app and read your happiness evidence. It is physically impossible for your brain to spiral into negative self-talk when you are looking at cold, hard facts that prove your students are thriving in your room.

The Bottom Line:

Lean into the silly, be the leader of the fun, and let your daily wins remind you of who you really are. You are a great teacher—your brain just needed the receipts!
