Lesson Plans to Help Kids Fall in Love with Music
Let’s help your kiddos fall in love with music! In this episode of The Happy Music Teacher, we dive into some engaging lesson plans to help. Picture books like Leaf Trouble by Jonathan Emmett, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves by Lucille Colandro, and Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson will be the backbone of your fall music lessons. Learn how these stories can inspire creative movement, storytelling, and imaginative play in your music classroom.
We’ll also explore how incorporating instruments can engage your students even further. You’ll hear how giving them a choice in how to play the instruments and move to the music not only increases participation but keeps them excited about learning in the music room. Using these strategies, you’ll have your students falling in love with music in no time!
Curious about those strategies? You can check them out here:
🎵 Give them choices – Giving your students the power to choose how they participate helps foster creativity and boosts engagement.
🎵 Play as many instruments as possible – From tambourines to maracas, letting students explore a wide range of instruments keeps excitement high and attention focused!
🎵 Bring out props – Adding fun, interactive props like scarves or puppets makes your lessons more hands-on and helps students connect with the music on a deeper level.

Thank you for the encouragement to introduce new instruments.
Life is full and very intense in junior high. The choir students are there, and the band students are there. I am left with with the others.
I was hired to teach, but those that I have are tough. When we are busy, they love it. When there is even a minute of down time, they take over (talking, goofing around etc….) I have done piano basics, staffs, clefs, time signatures, note trees, and rest trees and more. They have worked on dance, and stage presence. They have each touched the piano.
There is a lot more to teach and I am excited to do so. I am curious if you have anything for junior high in particular.
Thank you for your consideration. I like the idea of the rest area, but in Junior High, they aren’t responsive like younger kiddos. Giving directions should never be a dumpster fire.
Giving choices, is important, and respecting them as people is important, but these guys take you for a ride! Any ideas? They aren’t enamored with choices.
With joy,
Katherine
